🎥 Slipper Lobster Tom Yum in Narathiwat https://youtu.be/wy8S9yX1fNs
🍴 Restaurant is Khrua Nasi Ulang (ครัวนาซิ อุลังค์)
Sai Buri (สายบุรี) Welcome to Sai Buri, in Pattani province, on the border of Narathiwat in Thailand. This is the best and most well known area for Malay style fermented anchovy sauce, known locally as Nam budu (น้ำบูดู).
Khrua Nasi Ulang (ครัวนาซิ อุลังค์ Here’s the restaurant: https://goo.gl/maps/QBLSv6cLhH2ANQPF6) This amazing restaurant in Sai Buri, serves a dish called Nasi Ulang, a Malay dish of rice and a variety of vegetables (and also a variety of fish and curries), all served with tempoyak (fermented durian) and importantly, a few different types of fermented anchovy sauce.
Nasi Ulang is a meal that is also very common in the northern Malaysian province on Kelantan, which shares the same culture with this area in Thailand. The food was outstanding, the variety of vegetables and all the different dipping sauces, and the mis of fermented durian with fermented anchovy sauce it’s a flavor that will always excite your mouth.
After lunch we drove down the road, and just into Narathiwat to see a small family run nam budu (น้ำบูดู), fermented anchovy sauce factory. It was great to learn about how it’s prepared and the important role that fermented anchovy sauce plays in the local Malay food of Pattani and Narathiwat.
Huge thank you to Muhammad and Rus from Papa Tagu (https://youtu.be/O8bieTQXThc) for taking me around on another incredible day of Thai and Malay food in Pattani!
Thank you for watching and hope you’re having a fantastic day!

Dannok, Thailand during Covid – May 2021
Dannok is a small immigration outpost on the Thailand/Malaysia border. It is very well known among Malaysians and Singaporeans, but I suspect that few farangs know about it. When I first went there in 2004 it was simply a place where farangs living in Thailand without visas went to do their 30 day ‘visa runs’. There were a few shops and small hotels, but nothing of interest.
A few years later a lot of the seedier nightlife establishments in Hat Yai began to close and this industry started relocating to Dannok. As a result, lots of new infrastructure started to be built. A lot of new hotels, bars, restaurants, massage shops and other businesses started springing up.
Everything in Dannok at that time was very much geared towards adults, but then there was a move to make it more familyfriendly and the Asian Cultural Village opened. This was quite a pleasant place and I spent an enjoyable day there with my young family some years ago.
And then, in 2020, Covid hit. As a result the border was closed. Thailand wasn’t too badly affected at first, but there was a big problem with Covid in Malaysia and the Thais were very keen to keep the border closed.
In 2021 the problem got a lot worse in Thailand, causing partial lockdowns, and Malaysia went into a full national lockdown from 12 May to 7 June. Thus the border is still very firmly closed. The effect on Dannok has been devastating. As the town had developed it had become quite a busy place, but now it is completely dead.
No one knows when it will reopen again, but it certainly won’t be any time in the near future.
I have been writing about Dannok on my website for years and if you’d like more information the following page would be a good place to start:
